CRoLEV Research Day

On 8 December 2022, the School of Law of UCLan Cyprus held a Research Day. This event, organised within the framework of CRoLEV, successfully gathered advanced students, legal professionals, experts in the field of the rule of law and various stakeholders. The event took place in hybrid format, with several participants on campus and other online via MS Teams. The event was divided into two parts. The first part featured a presentation of CRoLEV outputs by the CRoLEV Team (Prof. Stéphanie Laulhé Shaelou, Dr. Andreas Marcou and Dr. Katerina Kalaitzaki) and a lecture by Dr Henrik Andersen, a Senior Visiting Fellow of UCLan Cyprus. Dr Andersen’s lecture, entitled ‘The Rule of Law, Human Rights and Climate Justice’ explored the connections between those principles, emphasising how courts have engaged with environmental cases. The second part of the day, entitled ‘CRoLEV Interdisciplinary Research Workshop’, primarily targeted advanced, graduate, and post-graduate students. Some of the workshops explicitly tackled issues related to doctoral studies, such as Dr Andrea Ferguson’s contribution on the ‘Future of Doctoral Education’ and Dr Lida Pitsillidou’s workshop on ‘Thesis Writing’. The remaining workshops tackled questions more directly relevant to research methodologies. Dr Josephina Antoniou discussed ‘Research Ethics Considerations’, Dr Ioanna Stylianou delivered a workshop on ‘Analysing and presenting data’, and Dr Katerina Kalaitzaki and Dr Andreas Marcou analysed the various ‘CRoLEV Methodologies’.

First ‘Social Mediation upholding the Rule of Law’ Training and Focus Group targeting CSOs delivered by ICLAIM and CROLEV under the ‘Citizen Empowerment’ Series
On 2 and 3 December 2022 CRoLEV joined the Interdisciplinary Centre for Law, Alternative and Innovative Methods (ICLAIM) in the delivery of a new ‘Social Mediation upholding the Rule of Law’ Training and Focus Group targeting CSOs in Cyprus and beyond. The Social Mediation project was initiated in the Spring of 2018 by UCLan Cyprus and ICLAIM, and this latest training constitutes a part of a three-year-long series under CRoLEV. Using previous ICLAIM experience and CRoLEV research, the workshop brought together practising lawyers, civil society professionals, and members of the public to discuss how Social Mediation can be used as a citizen empowerment tool in defending the Rule of Law in the European Union and beyond.  As part of CRoLEV citizen-centred events planned in 2023 and 2024, the remaining two trainings and focus groups are scheduled for December 2023 and 2024 respectively. Each training and focus group will be enriched with research findings from the previous year and feedback received from participants, building further on the enrichment of the activities of the Social Mediators’ Network supported by ICLAIM.
